Album Description HELIGOLAND is the much anticipated fifth studio album from legendary trip-hop duo MASSIVE ATTACK and the first new studio album since 2003's critically-acclaimed 100TH WINDOW. HELIGOLAND features an all-star cast of guest vocals from DAMON ALBARN, HOPE SANDOVAL, MARTINA TOPLEY-BIRD, GUY GARVEY and TUNDE ADEBIMPE. Long time cohort HORACE ANDY makes a return alongside Massive Attack founding members ROBERT DEL NAJA (3D) and GRAND MARSHALL (DADDY G). Damon also plays bass on `Flat Of The Blade' and keyboards on `Splitting The Atom' while PORTISHEAD's ADRIAN UTLEY plays guitar on `Saturday Come Slow'. The band also collaborated with DFA's TIM GOLDSWORTHY on selected tracks. The cover artwork features an original image by ROBERT DEL NAJA. Over the last three years Robert Del Naja has written and produced soundtracks for a number of films and documentaries, including `Trouble In The Water', '44 Inch Chest', `In Prison My Whole Life' and `Gomorra', the latter for which he won the David Di Donatello Award for Best Song. Massive Attack also won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivor Novello Awards.

Old Lady Likes It September 2, 2010 Minnie Min (USA) I heard a preview of this CD on NPR and liked what I heard. I bought it and I am not disappointed. Not upbeat, but riveting sounds and words. Futuristic in tone.
Almost.. August 11, 2010 Michael (Torrance, US, Canada) I really like Massive Attack. They have created a sound that has most resembled a sound I have always dreamed of. This album could have been that dream itself. Unfortunately it falls a little short. This album coulda been Radioheads "Kid A". However, 4 tracks hinder it from becoming that masterpiece. Those four tracks are
1. Girl I Love You
2. Flat of the Blade
3. Rush Minute
4. Saturday Come Slow
These tracks are abysmal. I appreciate the creativity of "The Flat of the Blade" I almost let that slide but these four tracks really block the flow of the album. They could have replaced these four tracks with something more creative. Rush Minute is so boring.. How do you put that in the final piece? They rushed this album. Also, theres not sych between each tracks.. theres a couple of seconds before each track begins.. Those couple of seconds feel that this album is just a "Collection of Songs" and not of something greater. Man.. This coulda been THE ALBUM.. You know why? Because
1. Pray For Rain
2. Babel
3. Splitting the Atom
4. Psyche
5. Paradise Circus (Best Massive Attack Song Ever)
6. Atlas Air
ARE AMAZING! Very Creative. These songs really feel like your in a place called 'Heligoland'. Perfection. Im not even going to begin to describe How GOOD PARADISE CIRCUS is.. the review would be too long. But these songs are so good that the other 4 feel like outtakes. Damn.. THIS Coulda been the album.. The other 4 songs suck. They just suck. They coulda replaced these 4 with other creative masterpieces. I have a bunch of ideas they could have done that would have still retained the 'Heligoland' spirit. Aw well, hopefully they will get it right next time. 100th Window was ALMOST a masterpiece too.. but it fell short. I Still Love Massive Attack. Their the best.
By the way: The album cover is PERFECT. The album is PERFECT save those 4tracks.
Love this direction...... August 3, 2010 Jimmy DeLoche (The Deep South) This album is a perfect example of "less is more". Restrained. Uncluttered. Focussed. Making minimal use of production tech without being lo-fi and trendy. I think it is easily one of the 5 best albums of the year.
Resonant July 26, 2010 Douglas King (Cincinnati, OH United States) After my favorite Massive Attack album, the intoxicating "Mezzanine," I was slightly disappointed by "100th Window." I found the album to be, although expertly executed, lacking emotional resonance. Which was odd, especially since it featured tracks with vocals by Sinead O'Connor, who is normally nothing if not emotionally raw. And yet even her tracks fell flat.
Thankfully, Heligoland seems to restore the emotional resonance of Massive Attack's best work. What we have here is a collection of Massive Attack's hypnotic, sexy, underworldly grooves being steered by a variety of interesting and sympathetic voices. In a way, it all sounds like the soundtrack to a movie musical, with different and distinct characters telling their tales, which all fit together into a common story.
Although I'm fond of all the tracks, the one I can't get out of my head is "Psyche," which features beautifully poetic lyrics undersung against a dreamy backgdrop:
"Dissolving who we are/Call out for yesterday's destiny come/We're on a foreign shore" ... gorgeous!
spent fury July 18, 2010 drdrmike (Chicago, IL USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't write many reviews, but wanted to make sure that any Massive Attack fan doesn't waste time on this album. It is sadly without any of the energy, creative rhythmic spark, innovative electronic soundscapes, touching lyrics... you name it... that we know & love from Blue Lines, Mezzanine and to a lesser extent from other early M.A. releases. I actually found my self skipping ahead after several minutes of individual tracks, so tedious were the unvarying beats. If anyone reading this has not heard Mezzanine, though, get it. Not just the best M.A. album, but in my opinion, the best album of the 90s.
